Dedicated to the memory of some of the great lepidopterists of the past–Edward Newman, Henry Stainton and James Tutt–this book is a celebration of our rich entomological heritage and undoubtedly will appeal to everyone interested in butterflies and moths and natural history in general.
The 230 plus contributions are profusely illustrated with 8 colour plates, 138 black and white photographs and text figures and over 50 specially commissioned illustrations by Tim Bernhard. The first edition is limited to 1000 personally numbered copies.
The sequel to The Aurelian Legacy: British Butterflies and Their Collectors, by Michael Salmon (published by Harley Books), 'The Aurelian’s Fireside Companion' is an entertaining miscellany of humorous, fascinating – at times extraordinary and eccentric – articles, letters, notes and observations about butterflies and moths gleaned from the past two hundred years of British entomological literature. Whatever their social standing, these butterfly and moth collectors were united by the common passion they shared for their pursuit: they were all fellow ‘brethren of the net’. Tantalizing insights into the lives of some of these often colourful and remarkable individuals are provided in the short pen portraits by the two authors.
Beginning with the Great Cornhill Fire of 1748–a disaster which almost destroyed the Aurelians and their fledgling Society–this anthology continues through the halcyon collecting years of the Victorian and Edwardian era and onwards through the twentieth century.
